Guide To Buying Duvets & pillows

 Choosing Your Duvet

Choosing Your Duvet

The weight, softness and warmth of a duvet depends on its tog rating and filling.
At the Fine Cotton Company, we stock natural duvets as they are extremely durable and naturally breathable.
For our contract customers, we supply natural and synthetic products.
These are available in a range of tog rating

How to Choose Your Tog

Tog ratings are based on a duvet's ability to trap warm air.

Natural filled duvets have efficient thermal properties and do not need to feel heavy so their weight can be deceptive.
The higher the tog rating; the warmer the duvet.
Generally tog ratings are suited to different times of the year:
Summer : 3.0 - 4.5 tog
Spring/Autumn: 6.0 - 10.5 tog
Winter: 12.0 - 13.5 tog

Choosing your filling

Duvets with natural fillings are soft, light and comfortable, in the same way that natural fibres help your skin 'breathe' more effectively.
They are also highly resilient.

Synthetic duvets are suitable for allergy sufferers.

There are benefits to all the different types of fillings and it really is down to personal choice.

All our duvets are manufactured to a high quality.

Choosing Duvets for Children

For children it is important that they do not overheat.
Duvets trap more air around children and this increases the level of warmth. It is better to choose a lighter weight duvet somewhere between 4.5 and 9 tog.
A heavier 13.5 tog duvet may well prove uncomfortable, and is not recommended.

We also stock duvets in cot and cot bed sizes, but please note that duvets and pillows are not suitable for children under 12 months and that a room temperature of 18°C is recommended by many health professionals.

Goose Down & Goose Feather & Down

Goose Down & Goose Feather & Down

Down comes from the breast of a duck or goose, is very good at trapping air and therefore an excellent insulator, offering a luxurious warmth and comfort yet very lightweight.
Down has no quill and so is very soft.
The more down in a duvet the softer, lighter and more luxurious it will feel.

Our goose down duvets are sensationally soft and light in weight but are very warm. They cope well with variations in temperature so can be used all year round.
Specialist cleaning is recommended.
Matching pillows are available.

Caring for Your Duvets & Pillows

Caring for Your Duvets & Pillows

We recommend that you take all our quilts and pillows to a specialist cleaner to be laundered and thoroughly dried.
This is because professional cleaners have large dryers to ensure your duvet is fully dry and won't develop mildew.
Full instructions can be found on each duvet care label.

With appropriate care, natural duvets will last for 10 to 15 years, however, the number of times a duvet is laundered will have an impact on its lifespan, as will repeatedly lying or sitting on top of it as this has the effect of compressing the filling and eventually diminishing its ability to trap air.
You should shake your duvet each morning to redistribute the filling.

All our pillows can be laundered in a large capacity washing machines but we do recommend they are cleaned professionally to ensure they are fully dried after washing.
Pillows will have a shorter lifespan than duvets.
This is because of the weight of our heads is flattening it all through the night and therefore over the years the level of support and comfort will deteriorate.
We suggest you plump up pillows daily
